Greece’s Athens International Airport has recorded a remarkable boost in passenger traffic, rising over ten percent in March 2025 compared to the same month last year. With more than 2.22 million travelers passing through the airport, the surge was fueled by strong international demand and a steady rise in domestic travel. The upward trend extended into the first quarter, as Athens Airport handled 5.81 million passengers—an 11.4 percent increase year-on-year—further solidifying its status as a leading travel hub in Southeast Europe and positioning Greece for a robust summer tourism season.

Athens International Airport has maintained its impressive growth momentum, with passenger traffic soaring in March 2025. A total of approximately 2.22 million travelers passed through Eleftherios Venizelos Airport during the month — a solid 10.8 percent increase compared to March 2024.

This upswing was fueled by gains in both domestic and international segments. Domestic travel posted a modest 2.1 percent year-on-year increase, while international traffic surged ahead with a 14.4 percent rise.

The first-quarter performance further highlights this upward trajectory. Between January and March 2025, the airport handled 5.81 million passengers, reflecting an 11.4 percent boost over the same period last year. Domestic traffic rose by 3.1 percent, while international volumes soared by 15 percent, reinforcing Athens’ status as a key international gateway.

Flight operations also kept pace with demand. A total of 50,651 flights took off or landed at the airport during the first three months of the year — up 9.3 percent from 2024. Although domestic flights dipped 0.5 percent, international flight activity experienced a significant 16.1 percent jump year-on-year.

These figures reinforce Athens’ growing stature as a major travel hub in Southeast Europe, with robust international demand setting the stage for a strong summer tourism season.
